Jack Sullivan, an aspiring Roman Catholic deacon, hoped for a quick recovery from spinal surgery to keep his ordination on track. But, days after the surgery, he was unable to stand or walk.
A man of deep faith, he heard an appeal for prayers for the beatification of beloved 19th century churchman and Catholic convert Cardinal John Henry Newman -- a towering intellect with a humble manner whose life spanned almost the entire lengthy of the 19th Century. He died in 1890. "I said a simple little prayer to Newman to intercede with God. Please. Cardinal Newman, help me to walk so that I can return to classes.... "I was hunched over on my bed in agony. and then all of a sudden I got caught up in something very beautiful . It was the most joyful moment I've ever experienced. And it lasted for a long time. "And when I started to come out of it, I was standing up straight. I didn't know I had gotten up. and I yelled to the nurse that was standing next to me, I have no more pain. " Sullivan IS 71, retired court magistrate, married forty-one years with three grown children. He loves to tend the garden at his Marshfield home, and knows there are those who are very skeptical about his healing -- especially in Newman's homeland, the United Kingdom.
